AstraZeneca, the pharmaceutical company that makes Celebrex, has agreed to pay $1.64bn (£2.7bn) for marketing, promotion, research and development. It is one of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies. It makes the anti-inflammatory Celebrex, a type of painkiller called a selective COX-2 inhibitor. In 2012, the US was the second-largest drug company by sales after Sanofi, which made Celebrex. AstraZeneca said it has reached an agreement with US government health authorities to pay the US government more than $2.5bn (£1.3bn), or £10.2 billion, in damages as a result of its advertising and promotional activities, in excess of $2.6bn (£1.5bn).
The deal was announced by US President Barack Obama.
In a statement, AstraZeneca said: "This is a very special moment for us and our colleagues. We have a responsibility to our patients, to the NHS and to the community. We will continue to make every effort to make sure that all our activities continue to put patients first and that they receive the most important treatment possible. This includes the treatment of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and asthma. AstraZeneca has a responsibility to the community and to the health care system."
The company said the agreement will result in an increase in the number of patients suffering serious health problems, to about 30,000, or 3,000 per year.

Celecoxib (Celebrex) belongs to a group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which are used to relieve pain and inflammation. It is often prescribed for the short term relief of moderate to severe pain, such as back, muscle and pelvic pain. Celebrex is sometimes used off-label for the short-term relief of mild-to-moderate pain, such as headache, dental pain, muscular aches, arthritis, or backache. If you have experienced joint pain for an MRI, for example OA, for example OA2, Celebrex may be used alone or with in-clinic or hospital use. Celebrex can be prescribed to people who are at risk of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and/or ankylosing spondylitis. It can also be used to relieve the symptoms of fever, chills and sore throat. In addition to pain relief, Celebrex can reduce the risk of ulcers, and the risk of bleeding by up to 25%. CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is also used to manage juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (in children aged 2 years and above).
CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Celecoxib, sulfonamides, aspirin and/or other NSAIDs. It is also not recommended for use in patients with/had a history of an ulcer in stomach/intestines, bleeding in stomach/intestines, blood circulation problems (such as peripheral arterial disease), red itchy welts, inflammatory disease of the intestines (such as ulcerative colitis/Crohn’s disease).
The medicine is also not indicted for use in patients suffering from lung problems (such as asthma), heart diseases (such as heart failure, recent heart attack, heart block), severe liver disease (such as advanced hepatic insufficiency) and/or kidney disease (such as advanced renal insufficiency).
Before taking CELEBREX 200MG CAPSULE, inform your doctor if you have diabetes, raised blood pressure, increased cholesterol, signs of fluid retention (such as swollen ankles and feet) and/or hyperkalemia (increased potassium level in blood).
