Abstract: Celecoxib (celecoxib/Celebrex) has been shown to decrease inflammation. This study investigated whether the selective COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib could be associated with an improvement in the upper gastrointestinal mucosal barrier. The study was carried out in 14 healthy volunteers.

Methods:Samples of each group were taken at baseline and 1, 3, and 6 months after administration of celecoxib. At baseline and 1, 3 and 6 months, the subjects were divided into 2 groups: control group (n=10), celecoxib group (n=10) and celecoxib + Celebrex (n=10). The results showed no significant difference in the upper GI mucosa barrier over time. However, celecoxib + Celebrex group showed significantly increased the lower upper GI mucosa barrier (P=0.0014). Celecoxib was associated with significantly improved upper GI mucosal barrier in comparison to celecoxib group.
Results:The results of this study showed that celecoxib + Celebrex group showed significantly increased upper GI mucosal barrier over time. Celecoxib + Celebrex group had significantly improved upper GI mucosa barrier over time (P=0.0014). Celecoxib was associated with significantly improved upper GI mucosa barrier in comparison to celecoxib group.
Conclusions:This study shows that celecoxib + Celebrex group was more effective than celecoxib group in reducing upper GI mucosal barrier over time. Celecoxib is associated with significantly improved upper GI mucosal barrier in comparison to celecoxib group.
